Sixty Years On . . .
by Kathleen George, Companion of SSF
It is now fifty years since I became a Companion of the Society of Saint Francis. During that time, friendships with members of the First Order and with other Companions have increased the significance of St Francis for me.
Throughout the years, what memories! We camped at Hilfield and held gardening weeks at Compton Durville. These
occasions were a source of inspiration and fellowship to us all. A request from Brother Reginald at a Companions’
Meeting led to the planning of a visit by a youth group to Assisi in 1966, accompanied by Brother Vincent. Brother
Hubert came with us to Oberammergau in 1970 and Brother Silyn to the Holy Land in 1974. When I was living in Dover,
letters used to come from strangers saying, “Brother Vincent says you might have a bed for us on our way to and
from Bec.” Lasting friends were made on those visits. Brother Kevin led a group of Companions from Belfast to
Sussex, and our Sussex Companions and friends helped to make the visit a success.
